Teaching Reading: report and recommendations – National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy

Teaching Reading, the report of the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy, was released in 2005.

Abstract

In the Teaching Reading report the Committee for the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy makes recommendations relating to evidence-based approaches to the teaching of reading; school leadership and management; standards of teaching assessment; the preparation of teachers; teachers’ ongoing professional learning; and the role parents can play in helping their children to become proficient readers.

The inquiry found that all students learn best when teachers adopt an integrated approach to reading that explicitly teaches phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary knowledge and comprehension. This approach, coupled with effective support from the child’s home, is critical to success.

The committee’s report, Teaching Reading, comprises three parts - the Report and Recommendations, a Guide to the Report and Recommendations for Parents and Carers, and a Literature Review.
