Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre aims to be a national leader in engaging people in science and technology.
Questacon brings science to Australia and further afield through design, development and presentation of interactive exhibits, programmes and science performances.
Since Questacon's beginning at the old Ainslie Public School in 1980 to its tenure on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin from 1988, the Centre remains committed to a better future for all Australians through engagement with science and innovation.
More than 6 million local, regional, national and international visitors have had a fun and relevant science experience at Questacon since the centre opened in 1988.
Visitors to Questacon experience around 200 engaging interactive exhibits in the seven exhibition galleries. Questacon also offers various visitor programmes including Spectacular Science Shows in any one of the three theatre spaces, science-themed birthday parties, after-dark visits and even overnight stays. These programmes help to ensure that the Questacon experience is always unforgettable.
Since Questacon was founded it has always aimed to bring the wonder of Questacon to children throughout the nation who may not be able to visit the Centre in Canberra.
That has been achieved through the numerous Outreach Programmes which travel the length and breadth of Australia each year. These programmes include, The Shell Questacon Science Circus, Questacon Smart Moves, Tenix Questacon Maths Squad, Indigenous programmes as well as others.
As well as exciting exhibitions for the children, Questacon has a full range of educational materials that have been developed to complement and supplement exhibitions
presented by the Centre.
Questacon has a five year plan striving to increase awareness and understanding of science and innovation through inspirational learning experiences. This is being achieved through five strategic priorities including building quality exhibitions, communicating the wonder of science and technology to the Australian public and building and renewing partnerships.
Questacon has been a division of the Department of Education, Science and Training since 1 July 2003. Within Questacon the Council helps to strategically guide the Centre into the future.
