Visiting Questacon

More than 6 million local, regional, national and international visitors have had a fun and relevant science experience at Questacon since the centre opened in 1988.

During the 2004-2005 financial year 398 603 people visited the Centre, compared with 350 439 in the previous year – an increase of over thirteen percent. Over 1000 school groups come to Questacon every year, from as far a field as Hobart (Tas), Tapping (WA) and Milingimbi in Arnhem Land (NT).

Visitors to Questacon experience around 200 engaging interactive exhibits in the seven exhibition galleries. Questacon also offers various visitor programmes including Spectacular Science Shows in any one of the three theatre spaces, science-themed birthday parties, after-dark visits and even overnight stays. These programmes help to ensure that the Questacon experience is always unforgettable.

Questacon’s membership programme allows families to pay a single membership fee and visit Questacon as often as they like for an entire year. Questacon’s 11 000 members receive quarterly newsletters and are treated as VIPs with exclusive new exhibition previews and special members’ nights. For more information visit http://www.questacon.edu.au/html/q_club.html or call (02) 6270 2800.

Questacon offers a special individual membership to local teachers so they can gain the maximum benefits from Questacon’s facilities and education resources. The 150 local area teachers who are part of the programme gain all the benefits of Q Club membership along with Questacon designed and presented professional development workshops.

During school holidays, children can come to Questacon and participate in different science themed activities each morning and afternoon.

In 2004, 15 737 school visitors had an exciting evening at a Q by Night. Popular amongst interstate groups, students have the exhibition galleries to themselves between 5pm – 9pm after the public has left. The students are entertained with thrilling science at a time when other Canberra venues are closed. Ever imagined sleeping through a tornado or an earthquake? You can! Sleepovers offer the unique opportunity for schools and recreational groups to stay over night in the Questacon galleries, amongst the exhibits.

Young children love Questacon Birthday Parties because they have so much fun. Parents are keen to take advantage of the family-friendly, fun and educational Questacon exhibits and the exuberant trained staff, who last year entertained some 5433 partygoers.

The Excited Particles, Questacon’s troupe of theatre performers, present science shows in Questacon’s very own, fully equipped theatre every day. Last year the Excited Particles performed 2544 hilarious science shows for 188 127 people.

Shopping is often a popular part of the Questacon experience. The Q Shop stocks the largest range of science themed books, games and science kits in Canberra and visitors can purchase gifts or souvenirs of their Questacon visit.
