Asia’s Scientific and Economic Growth - Opportunities for Australia [PMSEIC working group report]

This report was prepared by an independent working group for the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) and was presented at the 15th meeting of PMSEIC on 2 June 2006.

Abstract

This report was prepared by an independent working group for the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) and was presented at the 15th meeting of PMSEIC on 2 June 2006.  The views expressed in the report are those of the working group, not necessarily those of the Australian Government.  The report examines the growth of China and India as global economic and technological players, and the implications of this for Australia’s economic well-being. In addition, strategies are proposed for capturing the opportunities arising from the emergence of the Indian and Chinese economies. The report makes recommendations for ensuring Australia maintains global competitiveness by:

  • encouraging business engagement with China and India,
  • enhancing linkages with China and India in education, science and technology,
  • strengthening the foundations of Australia’s education system.
