This report examines whether the supply and quality of scientists and engineers is adequate for present and future labour market requirements and whether Australian society is sufficiently literate and numerate in science and mathematics.
In relation to supply and demand for scientists and engineers, the report looks at the supply of scientists and engineers through higher education and immigration and at labour market demand as demonstrated in industry and occupational distribution, job prospects for new graduates, and other indicators. Data are mainly from 1996 but include earlier comparisons. At the school level, enrolment shares decreased in advanced mathematics and (for Year 12) the natural sciences between 1986 and 1996. Shortages of secondary teachers of mathematics and science exist in some States and could worsen over the next five years.
