The Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) met at Parliament House in Canberra on Friday 2nd June 2006. The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP, assisted by the Hon Julie Bishop MP.
The Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Heritage, Mr David Borthwick, advised the Council on follow-up activities in regard to the Biodiscovery and Tsunamis reports from the December 2005 PMSEIC meeting. The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator the Hon Helen Coonan, also reported back to the Council in regard to The Role of Creativity in the Innovation Economy report presented at the December 2005 meeting.
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, and the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, gave presentations on major Government initiatives affecting science and innovation.
Three early career researchers, Dr Sebely Pal (Curtin University of Technology), Dr Spencer Williams (University of Melbourne) and Ms Jasmin Craufurd-Hill (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) presented to the Council their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges encountered when establishing a career in science. Their presentations can be accessed below.
A final report was prepared by the working group on Asia’s Scientific and Economic Growth- Opportunities for Australia. The PMSEIC working group’s report and appendix are available below. The views expressed in them are those of members of the working group, not necessarily those of the Australian Government. There was also a progress report from the PMSEIC working group on Data for Science.
The next meeting of PMSEIC is scheduled for December 2006.
