The Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council - Fourteenth Meeting

The Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) met at Parliament House in Canberra on Friday 2 December 2005. The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP, assisted by the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP.

Professor David Boger, winner of the 2005 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science, was welcomed to the Council for a one year term.

The Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator the Hon Ian Campbell advised Council on follow-up activities in relation to the Opportunities for Antarctic and Southern Ocean Science report from the PMSEIC meeting in March 2005.  The Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP and the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP also advised Council on follow-up activities in relation to the Nanotechnology report from that meeting. The Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, and The Parliamentary Secretary for Trade, Senator the Hon Sandy Macdonald (representing The Hon Mark Vaile MP) provided an update in relation to the Growing Technology-based SMEs report that was presented at the March 2005 meeting.

The Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP and the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP gave presentations on major Government initiatives affecting science and innovation.

Three final reports were prepared by independent working groups for PMSEIC, on Biodiscovery, Tsunamis and The Role of Creativity in the Innovation Economy. Copies of the reports and presentations are available below. The views expressed in them are those of members of the groups, not necessarily those of the Australian Government. There was a progress report from the working group on Asia’s Scientific and Economic Growth – Opportunities for Australia.

The next meeting of PMSEIC is scheduled for June 2006.
