The Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council – Sixteenth Meeting

The Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) met at Parliament House in Canberra on Friday 8 December 2006. The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP.

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, and the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, reported back to Council on follow up to the report Asia’s Scientific and Economic Growth – Opportunities for Australia which was tabled at the last meeting.

Dr Peter Jonson, Chair of the Cooperative Research Centres Committee provided an overview of the programme. This was followed by presentations from two industry based researchers, Dr David Noon and Dr Lyndall Bull, who began their careers at CRCs. Dr David Noon of GroundProbe Pty Ltd began his career at the CRC for Sensor Signal and Information Processing and the University of Queensland. Dr Lyndall Bull currently works at Timbercorp Forestry and completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne within the CRC for Wood Innovations. Dr Noon and Dr Bull presented to the Council their thoughts on the importance of the CRC programme in launching their careers. Their presentations can be accessed below.

Two PMSEIC working groups presented reports: Data for Science and Australia’s Science and Technology Priorities for Global Engagement. The reports and associated presentations can be accessed below. The next meeting of PMSEIC is scheduled for June 2007.
