Innovative delivery and community focus brings national recognition to Ipswich
14 October 2004
A local training provider that’s focused on innovative delivery and addressing the training challenges of the local community is now in line for a national training award.
The Bremer Institute of TAFE is a finalist in the Large Training Provider of the Year category of the 2004 Australian Training Awards to be held in Melbourne next month.
In addition to achieving impressive increases in student participation and student employment outcomes, the institute developed pilot training programs for refugees, at-risk youth, disengaged youth, people with a disability and pregnant or parenting teenagers. Bremer also embarked on an ambitious three-year strategy to develop a localised hub for all education and training in the Brisbane/Ipswich western corridor.
“The triumphs achieved at the Bremer Institute over the past 12 months are a glowing testimony to what can be accomplished when an entire organization decides to work with a keen sense of common purpose towards the same vision and goals,” said acting institute director, Kaylene Harth.
According to ANTA chairman, David Hind, Australia’s key to keeping ahead of international competitors is world-class training providers who meet the skill needs of businesses and individuals.
“Providers like The Bremer Institute of TAFE are breaking new ground in delivering quality training when, how and where businesses, students and the community want it,” said Mr Hind.
The Bremer Institute is one of four Queensland organisations vying for national honours at the awards. Gold Coast builder, Boss Homes, Cairns nursery, Mad About Plants and the Queensland Police Service Academy’s justice entry program will line up against competitors from around the country.
Four students will also be flying the Queensland flag. Mackay’s Brendan Bishop, Yvonne Gordon of Dalby, Cheryl Callender from the Cairns suburb of Bayview Heights, and Belinda Bennett of Redcliffe are all in the running for a national title.
The 2004 Australian Training Awards will be held at the Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne on Thursday, 18 November 2004. The awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of apprentices, trainees and students as well as the contribution of enterprises and training providers to skilling Australia.
The Australian Training Awards are hosted by the Australian National Training Authority and supported by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training.
