Insider training brings national recognition
15 October 2004
An innovative training program designed specifically for prisoners is in line for a national training award.
Auswest Specialist Education and Training Services from WA’s Department of Justice is a creative frontline team that delivers innovative and flexible training to around 6000 prisoners a year in the state’s 12 prisons and six prisoner work camps. The program is one of three finalists to contest the Australian Training Initiative Award category of the 2004 Australian Training Awards to be held in Melbourne next month.
Flexible, innovative and inclusive educational services are provided to some of the state’s most disadvantaged people, improving prisoners’ self esteem, life skills and employment prospects on release.
The program is delivered by 40 education personnel, 30 industrial training personnel, and more than 100 casual tutors. Courses range from construction to hospitality, horticulture and engineering. Characterised by diversity, flexibility and inclusiveness, this correctional education program benefits the individual, their family, Australian industries, the prison system and the general community.
According to ANTA chairman, David Hind, Australia’s key to keeping ahead of international competitors is world-class training providers who meet the skill needs of businesses and individuals.
“Providers like Auswest are breaking new ground in delivering quality training when, how and where it’s needed most,” said Mr Hind.
Auswest is one of three WA organisations in the race for national honours. Challenger TAFE and North Lake Senior Campus will also line up against competitors from around the country.
In the student categories, four students will be flying the West Australian flag. Boya’s Drew Wheeler, Madora’s Samantha Johnson, Merridoo Walbidi of the Bidyadanga Community (near Broome) and Latasha Santostefano of Australind are all in the running for a national title.
The 2004 Australian Training Awards will be held at the Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne on Thursday, 18 November 2004. The awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of apprentices, trainees and students as well as the contribution of enterprises and training providers to skilling Australia.
The Australian Training Awards are hosted by the Australian National Training Authority and supported by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training.
