Union leader joins ANTA Board
31 July 2003
Australian National Training Authority Board (ANTA) chairman Stuart Hornery today welcomed the appointment of union leader Julius Roe to the ANTA Board.
Mr Roe is national president of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union and has been involved in vocational education and training for more than a decade.
He has represented the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) on the national training quality council, a committee of the ANTA Board, or its predecessor bodies since 1990.
He is also a member of the Victorian Qualifications Authority and an active member of the joint industry training and education council (JITEC). JITEC brings together key business and union representatives.
Mr Roe began his career as a bus driver and served as a union delegate to the Australian Tramways & Motor Omnibus Employee''s Association (ATMOEA) for 11 years. He became an official of the AMWU’s predecessor in 1987, and has been integrally involved in the restructuring of the metal industry award.
Mr Hornery said Julius would bring extensive background knowledge of competency-based training and its value to individual workers and workforce development generally.
"Julius has been in the engine room as the national VET system and Training Packages have developed over the past decade," Mr Hornery said.
"He brings to the Board the employee’s perspective, which will help us tackle two of our main objectives for 2004-2010 – having a highly skilled workforce, and putting individuals and employers at the centre of VET."
Mr Roe’s first ANTA Board meeting will be in mid-August.
