Shaping our Future: Australia's National Strategy for VET 2004-2010

Shaping our Future sets a vision, four objectives and 12 broad strategies for progressing vocational education and training (VET) in Australia until the end of the decade. Read or order a printed copy of Shaping our Future  PDF Document  (181.2 KB).

The vision of the national strategy is:

  • VET works for Australian businesses
    making businesses internationally competitive
  • VET works for people
giving Australians world-class skills and knowledge
  • VET works for communities
    building inclusive and sustainable communities

Shaping our Future is a commitment by government ministers to continue to work in partnership with industry, providers and other parties to develop VET across Australia. It builds on the achievements of two previous national strategies, A Bridge to the Future (1998-2003) and Towards A Skilled Australia (1994-1998).

Shaping our Future guides VET planning for states and territories, and priority setting and resource allocation arrangements for VET across Australia. Each year the Ministerial Council will consider a progress report on the implementation of Shaping our Future

Put Shaping our Future to work using these resources for businesses, training providers, and communities, as a starting point.

Extensive research and consultation informed the development of Shaping our Future and its first action plan. Read reports You are now leaving the DEST website from the national strategy's research and development stage.
