The Turbine Hall, located in the heart of the Museum, was built in 1901 to house steam engines that generated electricity for Sydney’s trams. The original brickwork is still exposed along the high walls and historic Australian aircraft are suspended from the ceiling, including the Transavia featured in the movie Mad Max III.
Adjoining the Turbine Hall, the Transport exhibition is located in the former Boiler Room where the brick chimneys can still be seen. This spectacular exhibition explores transport systems over the past century and features suspended aircraft including the enormous Boeing Catalina flying boat Frigate Bird 11. Many types of vehicles that have shaped our way of life are on display including an 1882 Steam Locomotive and a Governor-General's railway carriage.
