Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY)

On 29 June 2007 the Department signed a contract for $2.56m with the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) to provide analytical services and reports for the next three years for the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY).

NCVER has an established reputation for data, research, and analysis in vocational education and training.  It undertakes and manages complex research, including on the experience of Australian Apprentices and the outcomes of participants in the VET system.  Under this contract NCVER will collaborate with the Social Policy Evaluation Analysis and Research Centre (SPEAR) at the Australian National University.  SPEAR has a substantial and innovative record in social policy and longitudinal research.

The Department funds and manages the LSAY programme, with support from the Australian and the State and Territory governments.  The programme has been in place since 1995.

The key element of LSAY is the tracking of a large sample of young people (around 14,000 to start with) each year between the ages of 15 and 25 years.  Analysis informs policy making in all education and training sectors.  It helps us understand the choices and experiences of young people, and what influences these, as they move from school to further education and training or work.  There is no comparable source of this information.

The previous contractor was the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).  Information about LSAY, reports produced to date and access to data from LSAY will continue to be available from the ACER and at their website at www.acer.edu.au/lsay/ until the completion of the handover to the NCVER.
