On Thursday 20 June Carmel Wagstaff, HR Manager for Australian Agriculture Company (AACo) visited DEST to talk about the vocational education and training initiatives that she and her company have developed for staff on its 18 properties in the Northern Territory and Queensland. Rural Skills Australia sponsored Carmel to visit Canberra to meet with a number of rural bodies including the National Farmers’ Federation, Rural Training Council and the Cattle Council.
Carmel was the motivator behind the AACo becoming a Registered Training Organisation in its own right in 1997. This arose from the demand for relevant training in the sector and the need to address the drift of workers away from rural employment in the past 10 years. The company now provides diploma level training for middle management, Certificate II and III for general staff and is negotiating with an external provider to offer staff the Certificate IV in agriculture. |

AACo has also initiated pathways for Indigenous people and developed partnerships with schools.
The recruitment, induction and training system developed by Carmel has become the benchmark for larger firms.
DEST staff appreciated Carmel’s candid comments about training issues from an employer perspective. Carmel also features in a rural careers CD ROM in the ‘ONTRACK - Real Skills,
Rural Future’ package of career information products (see article “New Rural Careers Information” in this issue of Training Talk).
