The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) has recently engaged CIT Solutions under the Industry Strategies Training Programme (Indigenous) to deliver a project which will run over the next twelve months. CIT Solutions will be working with New Apprenticeship Centres (NACs), Registered Training Organisations, Indigenous communities and other relevant agencies, to increase Indigenous uptake of New Apprenticeships and Training Packages.
The project will have the following stages:
-
Stage 1: June – August 2004. The consultants will visit 21 sites throughout Australia to collect ideas and information about projects which have/could successfully increase(ed) Indigenous participation in New Apprenticeships, as well as to identify the information and resource needs of key stakeholders in this area. DEST State Offices and NACs will feature strongly in these consultations.
-
Stage 2: August – December 2004. The consultants will develop and trial information resources.
-
Stage 3: November 2004 – March 2005. The resources will be nationally distributed and promoted through workshops and seminars in metropolitan and regional sites around Australia.
This project, and input from other stakeholders, will inform a series of regional projects to be run subsequently. For further information on this project contact Rosemary Castle at DEST on 02 6240 9288 or email at rosemary.castle@dest.gov.au.

In the 2004-05 Budget, Dr Brendan Nelson, Minister for Education Science and Training, restated the Australian Government’s commitment to increasing the vocational education and training opportunities for all Australians to enable them to participate effectively in the labour market. Accessing training opportunities is important for all Australians, but particularly those facing barriers to employment. |
New Apprenticeships can provide challenging and rewarding options and are increasingly seen as a ‘first choice’ career option by many Australians. There are currently over 406,000 New Apprentices in training in more than 500 different occupations.
We all know it isn't always easy to find work, let alone a New Apprenticeship, but the more skills and support you have the better your opportunities. With the growth and options available in New Apprenticeships, chances are that job seekers will not only be able to identify a New Apprenticeship that interests them, they will also enjoy strong prospects of lucrative, long term, challenging, and rewarding careers.
The New Apprenticeships Access Programme (NAAP) is an Australian Government initiative that assists disadvantaged job seekers overcome barriers to employment and obtain a New Apprenticeship. Each year over 4,250 eligible job seekers across Australia receive a minimum of 150 hours pre-vocational training, up to 13 weeks job search assistance and 13 weeks post placement support from NAAP to help them achieve and maintain a New Apprenticeship.
The training provided through NAAP is nationally recognised under the Australian Quality Training Framework, is based on labour market needs, and is linked to a New Apprenticeship (sometimes referred to as a traineeship) pathway. Recent NAAP programmes have provided participants with the opportunity to gain a New Apprenticeship in the business administration, automotive, construction, hospitality, aged care and retail industry sectors.
Job seekers eligible to participate in NAAP include the long term unemployed, Indigenous Australians and early school leavers. In most instances, job seekers must be checked for eligibility by Centrelink or a Job Network.
DEST contracts brokers to identify opportunities and manage the delivery of individual programmes. Brokers may sub-contract delivery of all or some of the programme to providers including Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and TAFEs.
The Australian Government recently committed to continue funding NAAP by extending the contracts of successful brokers by two years. During this time it is expected that another 9,000 disadvantaged job seekers will be assisted by NAAP Australia wide.
Further information about NAAP is available at: https://naap.dest.gov.au/default.asp

The 2004 WorldSkills Australia National Competitions were held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 28-30 May 2004. The Competitions were held in conjunction with the VET in Schools Competition and the Try-A-Trade event and in combination with Employment and Careers Expo it was Australia’s first interactive careers opportunity for young people.
There were over 60 different trade and skill events on display and 600 competitors from regions across Australia. The Award presentation Ceremony was held on Monday 31 May 2004 and Gold Medal winners will be eligible to go onto the selection process for the WorldSkills International Competition to be held in Helsinki, Finland in 2005.
 |
WorldSkills was established in 1981. It is a unique youth organisation which aims to support young people in the development of work ready skills and to raise the profile of vocational education and training (VET). WorldSkills is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and its vision is to inspire all young Australians to be national skill champions. The organisation’s aim is to achieve this by conducting school, regional and national skill competitions. WorldSkills Australia conducts skill competitions in over 52 trade and skill areas. |

There is now a way to explore the opportunities provided by vocational education and training (VET) pathways…. Try-a-Trade.
Try-a-Trade is an Australian Government Initiative, held for the first time this year in conjunction with the WorldSkills Australia National Competitions and the WorldSkills Australia VET in Schools Competitions, together with the Careers and Employment Expo in the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 28-30 May 2004.
This new initiative provides visitors to the expo and competitions with a chance to experience first-hand what it is like to tile a floor, plant a tree, change a tap washer or lay a brick. They were able to try their hand at painting and carpentry and tinker with a V8 engine. They were able to complete tasks required in the hospitality, beauty therapy, retail and floristry industries.
 |
The Try-A-Trade Initiative promotes the advantages of vocational educational pathways through the VET sector. It provides young people with “hands-on” experience in a broad range of trade and skills areas, it also makes available mentors (such as TAFE teachers and experienced tradespeople) to discuss and advise these young people on all aspects of the trades and working in the particular industries represented at the competition venues. |
